Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

We’re currently recruiting for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing engineering and manufacturing business in the Midlands.

This is a hands-on technical role within a small engineering team, designing bespoke production equipment and machinery from initial concept through to final design, procurement and build.

The role would suit an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer who enjoys problem solving, machine design and working on projects from scratch, while also having the experience and confidence to act as a technical lead and support more junior members of the team.

The Role

• Design bespoke mechanical plant, machinery and production equipment from concept to completion.

• Produce detailed 3D designs using Autodesk Inventor.

• Create manufacturing drawings, assembly drawings and technical documentation.

• Design and develop pneumatic and hydraulic systems.

• Work across complete production lines as well as individual assemblies and components.

• Ensure designs meet relevant UKCA, CE and machinery standards.

• Lead technical discussions and design reviews.

• Provide technical guidance and mentoring to other Mechanical Designers.

• Liaise with customers, suppliers, electrical engineers and production/build teams.

• Support project planning, costing, quoting and procurement.

• Manage projects against agreed timescales and budgets.

• Investigate technical issues and develop practical engineering solutions.

• Support continuous improvement and engineering department development.

• Provide technical information and documentation to maintenance and production teams.

• Attend project meetings and occasionally travel to UK and overseas sites.

The Ideal Candidate

We’re looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer with a strong background in machine design and manufacturing.

You should have:

• At least 5 years’ experience in a Mechanical Design Engineering role.

• Strong experience designing machinery or production equipment.

• Excellent 2D and 3D CAD skills – ideally Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.

• Good knowledge of pneumatics and hydraulics.

• Strong understanding of GD&T and engineering drawing standards.

• Experience with gears, belts, chains, bearings, ball screws and linear systems.

• Good knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, drilling, grinding, milling and turning.

• Experience taking designs from concept through to manufacture and build.

• Strong understanding of Design for Manufacture and practical engineering.

• Basic electrical knowledge.

• Experience working with suppliers and procurement processes.

• Strong communication and problem-solving skills.

• The confidence to provide technical guidance and mentor other engineers.

An NVQ, HNC/HND, BTEC or Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline would be advantageous, alongside relevant industrial experience.
